Les origines de Montélimar

Six thousand years ago, a village grew up in Gournier. In the early Ist century BC, a road was built from Lyon to Arles and a relay is established in Acunum (Aygu).

Part of the Kingdom of Royaume Bourgogne-Provence, the area around Montélimar came under the Germanic Holy Roman Empire in 1032. This period saw the rise to the power of the Adhémar de Monteil Family who built a palace and gave the town its name.

During the Wars of Religion, Montélimar was besieged on several occasions. Lesdiguières built the citadel that dominates the town.
